Royal Oak Middle Schools do not provide in-house latch key programs. Please note: After-school activities are held on Mon., Wed. & Thurs. nights until 4:00. On Tue. & Fri. THERE ARE NO ACTIVITIES except athletic practice. On Tues. & Fri. all students who do not have athletic practice must leave the campus by 3:00.* On Mon., Wed. & Thurs., all students who are not involved in activities must leave the campus at 3:00. There is no supervision for them after that time. Students who remain at school will be required to sit quietly with one of the principals in a classroom until their parents come in to the school to get them.

*The Boy’s & Girl’s Club offers a full program for students after school. Transportation is provided. Talk to Ms. Fish-Gilbert at 542-6500 x209 to make arrangements. The fee of $25 per year is prohibitive, scholarships are available.

White Team

The TMI and POHI classes will be performing at the Birmingham House for the ARC Talent Show on Thurs., April 18! They will perform songs and dances which they’ve been learning during music & dance therapies.

6th Grade Comets

**Reminder! Toronto money, slips and birth certificates are due by Wed., 4/24/02.
**Team breakfast on Fri., 4/26.
Math: We completed stained glass windows showcasing our knowledge of geometry this week. We will continue our study of geometry and coordinate planes next week.
Science: We will continue our study of cells next week. We are going to study both plant and animal cells. Students will discover how they are alike and how they differ.
Language Arts: We are working on our 6th grade compositions. Next week we will work on our final drafts in the computer lab.
Social Studies: Next week we will be finishing up our unit on the Renaissance. We will continue to learn about Europe as the week goes on.

6th Grade Gold

English: From 4/15 thru 4/29, students will be completing their 6th grade exit essay. This week we covered the pre-writing, drafting and editing phases. Next week they will move to the computer lab to finalize the pieces. Attendance is very important to this process, as well as adequate sleep and a good breakfast.
Science: This week we began our cell unit. Students will be doing a variety of activities to learn about cells and their functions. Some will include reading where we will apply various reading strategies, labs, hands-on activities and a culminating project to be announced on a future date.
Math: Students are working on a Geometric Project called “Stain Glass Windows.” They have a rubric and a check list. The due date for this project is April 29. Next week we will be preparing for a geometry test.
Social Studies: We have been working on the Middle Ages time period. We will be having a ceremony on Fri. in which students will be awarded into knighthood.

6th Grade Maroon

Language Arts: This week students have been working on their exit compositions-draft phases.
Science: Students are showing a lot of interest in our cell unit. We’ll be doing a lab on Mon./Tues. block - don’t miss it!
Math: The geometry unit is complete. The stain glass window assessment went great. Next week we will begin working on solving one-step algebraic equations.
Social Studies: Students will be turning in mobiles about European countries Mon. & Tues., as well as political cartoon current events. In class students will make maps, graphs and charts as part of a proposal for construction of a new railroad to connect with the existing Trans-Siberian railroad.

7th Grade Maroon

English: Ask to see your child's assignment update given out last week. If your child has not turned in a Thoreau essay and a book report, encourage him/her to get it done this weekend. Also, remind your child to return his/her science fiction or fantasy book to the Media Center. Next week students will use the writing process to write their 7th grade exit composition in class.
Math: We are continuing to explore solving equations. Ask to see their notes and help them with some problems.
Science: Students are concluding their weather unit and will be moving on to study the basics of Astronomy.
Social Studies: The classes have viewed the video "Thailand Visits" which familiarized them more with S. E. Asia as contrasted to our China and India studies. There has been some initial discussion since the material is new.

7th Grade Gold

English/Social Studies: Both departments have integrated their curriculum. Students are working cooperatively researching an endangered African animal. Power Point presentations began yesterday and will finish up on Mon. After this, the students will work on their exit paragraphs. In social studies, students will be making a chart comparing 3 cultures of Africa.
Science: Continuing the weather unit. There is a quiz on Fri., 4/26.
Math: Students will continue to work on algebra concepts this week. We had several well done fibonacci art projects submitted Fri. If your child would like 5 pts. extra credit for math, please sign here: ____________________________ and have your child give this Keller Times to me.

8th Grade Maroon

English: We will be writing the 8th grade Exit Composition implementing the writing process of mapping out ideas, revision, editing and the final draft.
U. S. History: Rough copies of Lewis & Clark journal entries should be done by April 23.
Science: We will be finishing up our unit on simple machines.
Math: Continue amusement park geometry project.

8th Grade Gold

**Coming soon to your Enrichment...brought to you by the City Year Corps...THE EGG DROP!
Science: Start thinking about how you are going to build your roller coaster-and think about the physics (forces) that will make it work-more forces to come.
Pre-Algebra: Integers, solving equations, quiz, no journal.
Algebra: Solving equations-”?” Wave experiment. Journal assigned.
English: Our 8th grade playwrights will continue sharing their plays and starting their 5 paragraph thesis essay on Our Town.
History: After a wonderful week in Virginia we will be wrapping up and moving westward...
